GROUP ITINERARY

This 2 days, 1 night trip to Zagora, a.k.a The Rocky Desert, is perfect for those of you who are short on time, but want to escape the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and get to have a desert like experience.

Expect a lot of driving, but it’s the only way to get to see and do so much within a short period of time, and the desert scenes won’t leave you disappointed!

You’ll get to see and experience the Atlas Mountains, Draa Valley, rural Berber villages, The UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, get to ride a camel and spend the night under the desert sky in a tent.

Please note that Zagora desert is a rocky desert and only has small sand dunes, unlike the large sand dunes you will have seen in photos of deserts like Merzouga. To visit this desert, you need at least 3 days. Zagora desert is perfect for those of you who do not have the luxury of time but want a desert experience, and let’s be honest here, great holiday pics! Or for those of you who want to have a new type of desert experience. 

Day 1: Marrakech > Ouarzazate > Zagora Desert

Following a morning pickup from your Hotel or Riad in Marrakech, you will embark on your air-conditioned minivan, heading away from the city towards the incredible High Atlas Mountains.

You will go via the beautiful Tizi-n-Tichka pass through traditional Berber villages. Keep an eye out for local shepherds who herd their flocks, and enjoy views of Morocco’s stunning countryside.

Along the way you will can stop for some refreshments at a local café (own expense) and get the chance to stretch your legs a bit. After your break you will continue on your way to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is Morocco’s largest Kasbah and also the filming location of Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Prince of Persia to name but just a few. Here you will have free time where you can hire a local guide (own expense) to explore the Kasbah in greater detail.

At around midday, you will continue on to Ouarzazate for lunch (own expense). Here you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal with some mint tea. If you have time you can also visit Taourirte Kasbah, although don’t worry if you don’t, as you will have another opportunity to the following day.

In the early afternoon, you will continue on through the Anti Atlas Moutains, to the oasis of Agdz where you will have time to relax. Followed by a drive through the palm trees and Berber villages of Draa Valley towards Zagora.
Once you arrive at the foot of Zagora desert, you will be met by your camel, who will take you through the desert on your camel trekking adventure to your tent, enjoying the beautiful views of the desert sun set.

Once you arrive to your tent, you will have the opportunity to relax and eat a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, whilst the locals play traditional folk songs. This is a great place to just lie back on the sand, and truly unwind, letting go of all life’s worries and stresses.

Day 2: Zagora Desert > Ouarzazate > Marrakech

It’s an early start to the morning, where you can either enjoy a stroll or enjoy the beautiful views of the desert sunrise. After which you can enjoy breakfast at the camp and then ride your camel back through the desert to meet your driver to begin your journey back to Marrakech.

On your way back you will have the opportunity to stop in Agdz to pick up some refreshments (own expense) and relax at your own leisure.

After which you will continue on the Ouarzazate for lunch (own expense) and more free time. If you missed the chance to visit Taourirte Kasbah the following day you will have the opportunity to again here.

After your chance to explore, you will continue your return journey to Marrakech, passing through the Atlas Mountains one final time, arriving back in Marrakech in the evening.

PRIVATE ITINERARY

We recommend Zagora Desert, also known as the Rocky Desert, as a must do experience for those of you who do not have the luxury of time (although with a private tour you’ll at least have the luxury of comfort), but would still love to have the desert tour experience. This 2 days, 1 night tour, includes sleeping in a desert tent, relaxing under the incredible desert night sky and riding a camel through the desert landscape.

Also, because this trip is the private option, you get your own private driver and transport, which means you have much more freedom and flexibility to do things at your own pace. You also get a private tent with bathroom, so you don’t have to sleep next to people you might not know and all guides are included in the price.

You get the opportunity to explore and discover a lot of new places in just two days. You will get to pass through the High Atlas Mountains, where you can view the stunning scenes of the Draa valley and its palm groves, as well as get to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou where many famous movies and series have been filmed.

Please keep in mind that Zagora desert is a rocky type of desert and only has small sand dunes, unlike the large sand dunes usual expected from deserts like Merzouga. Day 1: Marrakech to Zagora Desert through High Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate and Draa Valley

You will be picked up from your Riad or Hotel at about 8am, by your private driver and air-conditioned transportation. Setting off straight towards the magical Atlas Mountains and beautiful Tizi N Tichka pass.

As you drive through you will have the opportunity to stop off for photos and get to take in the break taking views that surround you and stunning landscapes, with many Berber villages along the way.

Once you arrive at the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, which is actually the largest Kasbah in Morocco and even a UNESCO World Heritage site, you will get the chance to have lunch where you can enjoy a local Moroccan cuisine and drink.

After lunch, you will be taken by a local guide in a private group to visit inside the great Kasbah, which has been host to an impressive list of famous movies and series, such as Game of Thrones, Gladiator and Prince of Persia.

You will then continue towards Zagora desert passing through Draa Valley. Once you arrive you will be greeted by your transportation for the afternoon – your own camel. You will get to enjoy a camel ride through the desert, witnessing the gorgeous desert sunset until you reach your camp. Here you can relax in the sand, unwind from the stresses of life and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, while the locals play their tradition folk songs for your entertainment.

Day 2 : Zagora to Marrakech via Draa Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and high atlas mountains.

You have an early start in the morning, but it’s totally worth it to witness the gorgeous morning sunrise over the small dunes of the Zagora desert. You will get to have breakfast in the bivouac of Zagora and go for a little hike, before setting off on your camel again back through the desert to meet your driver.

On your drive back to Marrakech, you will have some free time in Ouarzazate for lunch in one of the local restaurants, and get to visit the famous Kasbah of Taourirt. You will then commence your return to Marrakech passing through the amazing Atlas Mountains one last time, arriving to Marrakech for about 6pm.
